Behavioral Study

The second article is Behavioral Study of Obedience by Stanley Milgram. (Note: Conformity and obedience are discussed in Chapter 6 of the textbook).
In your first two paragraphs, summarize the research performed such that someone who knew nothing about the study would be able to understand the purpose, basic features, and outcomes of the research. In your remaining paragraphs, answer these questions about the article:
What aspects of the situation faced by the subjects in the Milgram study do you think were most influential in causing the subjects to obey? Why? Would you have been vulnerable to these factors? Do you think most people today would show similar levels of obedience? Why or why not? What if the authority in a situation is a team coach or an employer? Would you expect high levels of obedience?
When Milgram asked people to predict what percentage of subjects in his study would obey all the way to the 450-volt level, estimates were around 2-3%. Yet in the study Milgram found that 65% of the subjects actually obeyed all the way to 450 volts. How can you explain this discrepancy between the predictions and the actual findings? Explain how the fundamental attribution error (see chapter 5) might play a role in these very inaccurate predictions.
Consider the ethical implications of this research. What are the pros and cons of research such as Milgram’s? If you were an experimenter in Milgram’s study how would you have handled the debriefing of the subjects at the end of the study? If you were on a review board that was deciding whether or not to allow Milgram to conduct his study, how would you vote? Why?
Your paper should be between two and no more than three pages, double-spaced (not including the title and references pages). Use Times New Roman, 12 point font, 1½” margins all around. It should be thoroughly edited and proofread. I suggest using an outside proofreader. Your grade will depend on how well you understood the research and how completely address the questions listed above as well as on writing quality. Do not repeat the questions in your paper. Use headings as appropriate. As a reminder, you are required to use the APA Essay Template that is part of this module (as is the article itself).
