Literacy diploma

Assignment 2
2.1 Analyse how individual speakers and writers choose varieties, registers and styles according to personal, social, political and cultural factors
2.2 Analyse how language is used in the formation, maintenance and transformation of power relations
2.1 – 2.2 You should write an essay which analyses how individual speakers and writers choose varieties, registers and styles according to personal, social, political and cultural factors. For example, it might be interesting to look at the poetry of Robert Burns (e.g. ‘To a Mouse’, 1785), or the more recent work of poets such as John Agard (‘Half Caste’, 2005), and compare how the written form of language mimics the spoken word, and why they might have chosen to write in this way. You could then compare this to writers who use standard English, and discuss the factors that might have affected this choice.
In the second part of the essay, you should analyse the way language is used in the information, maintenance and transformation of power relations. Norman Fairclough’s Language and Power studies this topic in detail, and it might be useful to consider some of his theories when discussing this subject.

Assignment 3
3.1 Analyse personal, social and cultural factors influencing literacy learners’ language acquisition, learning and use
3.2 Analyse the impact of a range of learning difficulties and disabilities on literacy and language teaching and learning
3.1 – 3.2 You should write an essay which details and discusses the impact of personal, social, political and cultural factors on literacy learners’ language acquisition, learning and use. For example, you might wish to consider the importance of supporting multilingual learners, and how this factor may have an influence on the way in which they acquire language.
For the second part of the essay, the student should analyse the impact of a range of learning difficulties and disabilities on literacy and language teaching and learning. One of the learning difficulties you may wish to discuss is dyslexia, particularly because it is complex in nature, and those who are affected by it need consistent support.
