OBEDIENCE AND AUTHORITY: applying the Milgram experiment to current tragedy ( Aronson and Wilson, Social psychology 9th edition Ch. 8)
A local university made national headlines after the death of a football player at practice. The student died after enduring hours of a punishing weight lifting routine with little water or rest. Witnesses say the student wanted to stop but did not because the coach told him to keep going. His fellow players also seemed to want to help but instead maintained the difficulty of the workout based on the coach’s direction. Why did the football players, including the victim, yield to the coach? In your answer, use both Milgram’s experiment and the concept of obedience to authority to explain their yielding behavior.
